The Winter/Spring Reading List
A few of the best books I’ve read over the past few months.
Settling the Score
What happened to the classic movie score? And, can we ever go back to a time when leitmotifs and memorable music came pouring out of theaters?
A Pedal a Day Keeps Apple at Bay
Peloton needs Apple. Apple needs Peloton. It's just a matter of time.
The Station's Agent
I often wonder what the long-term plans are for people investing their life savings in opening gas stations in this day and age. It might be profitable in the short term, but it is a dying market. Between 1994 and 2013, the number of retail fueling sites in the U.S. fell from 202,800 to 152,995—a 25 percent decline, and that number will continue to drop drastically.
The New Agency (Isn't an Agency at All)
Let's put the art back in advertising. We can do this by reinventing the operating models of advertising and marketing agencies. We can create a bottom-heavy organization that puts the power back into the hands of the creators. We can use new tools to increase productivity and reduce overhead. And, we can stop castrating ideas over and over until they barely resemble their initial brilliance. All we have to do is put ourselves out there and see if we can't shake up the world.
Blue Optics
The American police need a makeover. It's time to visibly move away from intimidation and toward service.
The Beauty of the Vox Populi
How can the failures of Robert Moses improve the investments of private equity firms? Simple: listen to the people.
The Summer Reading List
A list of books I've read since June that I've thoroughly enjoyed. Read one. Read all. Read none. (I promise, there will be no test.)
It's In Our Nature
Everyone deserves a vacation. Everyone deserves time away, time to relax, and time to reconnect. And my love for stupidly nice hotels where the staff genuflects as you pass by and offers up cocktails made from the souls of young harbor seals will never die. But I realize now that getting back to nature, having adventures, and exploring a world away from commercialization is important, too. Take that trip to Ibiza, relax to your heart's content, but make sure you follow it up with a trip that takes you out of your comfort zone, challenges you, and pushes you forward.
The Rise of the Digital Twin
Digital twins are already hard at work in the automotive, healthcare, and manufacturing industries. It's time to create a space for them in the financial world, too. Building big data models is at the heart of any successful private equity firm, and having the ability to knock it around and poke holes in it in real-time would provide a level of understanding that we simply haven't had before.
The Beauty of the Participation Trophy
Having these "prove it to yourself" goals has allowed me to play an almost "connect the dots-like" scenario with my exercise. Complete one goal, then look for the next one, and eventually I'd have a string of physical accomplishments that have kept me healthy and motivated to look back on.
Moved by Bombs
Bombing has been on my mind lately. But not just the use of bombs, but why they were used, to what ends, and the long-lasting implications of their use. This lead to a curious realization as to how the lessons taught in both of these books can be applied to a marketing setting.
Heightened Destinations
How do we elevate marijuana dispensaries beyond a fast-food-like experience and create retail destinations that are enjoyable to visit?
All I Really Need to Know I Learned in the Boat
My life in college revolved around rowing, far more than academics and socializing. And it's only in looking back now that I realize how important being a part of my University's rowing team was for me personally and professionally.
Restroom 2.0
It's time to clean up public restrooms. In a post-COVID world, getting it right is more important than ever. To do that, we need to embrace emerging technology, and there are some key players making amazing strides that ensure a pleasant experience for all who head into a public loo.
Adobe's Non-Fungible Next Step
How does Adobe take the next step into the future? One that supports not only their users and their bottom line, but one that fits perfectly into their ecosystem? Simple, they need to embed NFT minting directly into their software.
Vaccine Passports Need the Blockchain
In the past, you were given yellow cards to indicate you were vaccinated and safe to travel. But in today’s world, how do those who’ve been truly immunized against COVID-19 prove it?
